Corbett Tiger Reserve — “Project Tiger”

“Project Tiger” – Pride Of Wild @ Jim Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary

Corbett is the prime location for the tourists as well as lovers of the wild life. However, apart from the tourism, wildlife activity has been more of an attraction at the park due to its origination for saving tigers. The park was established back in the year 1936 and is also known as the pride of Uttarakhand for its wildlife preservation. Wildlife doesn’t just cover animals but also the exotic variety of flora and fauna that is spread across this national park and is famous for the same across the world.

Going back in time, Jim Corbett National Park has a rich history in the conservation of the wildlife. Most especially the place is called an ideal home for the Bengal Tigers. Apart from that, the wildlife in the area is includes; deer, elephants, crocodiles, and other wild cats apart from Tigers along with, langurs, wild boars, and more.

Specialty of this place is that, the authority takes complete responsibility and initiation in conserving the wild species themselves without adulteration in their environment. Thus, everything about the park is absolutely natural which is why some parts are restricted for tourist activity due to the potential danger towards human life that these places have.

Initiation Of Project Tiger & Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary

The Reason: The primary reason behind Corbett Tiger reserve accommodation taking place was the rapid decrease in the population of Tigers soon after India got Independence. Not many are aware that, a humongous amount of deforestation activity took place after India got its Independence by the locals, to earn a livelihood. This in turn hugely affected the wildlife due to major decrease in forest area which was their sole resource of life, food and shelter.

Worsening Of The Situation: A number of developmental activities took place in the country but with cost of cutting down a large number of forests. Also, in the earlier times, kings considered it a royal habit to hunt and poach the wild cat to earn themselves the trophy of bravery. This even continued during the time Corbett had established and soon the Tiger that had been living in the respective area also started to come down in count.

The Act: Project Tiger was then started as a movement to conserve the rare variety of Royal Bengal Tiger so that their hunting and poaching came down legally. The project was initiated exactly on the 1st of April in the year 1973. Corbett was responsible for giving rise to a one of a kind conservation project in its time and so the park later got designated as the CTR, i.e. Corbett Tiger Reserve. This was amongst the first 9 such reserves that were an initiation of the past Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.

Currently the reserve has a rich population of a total 164 and counting Tigers and a 600+ elephant population. This shows the success achieved by the project, its initiation and implementation.

People Behind Project Tiger

Everybody is aware of the project and the success it achieved under the initiation of Indira Gandhi. However, very few know that many more rigorously working, unrecognized names are day after day and night after night, fighting for the rights and lives of these fierce Bengal Tigers.

  1. The entire project is managed by the Government of India in the direction of the Ministry of Environment & Forests.
  2. Head of the project is the Chief Conservator of Forest.
  3. Director Corbett tiger reserve Ramnagar takes care of the Tiger Reserve management and also does the financial provision to a number of state governments.
  4. Field Director project tiger Ramnagar is responsible for regularly submitting reports related to the project to the State’s Chief Wildlife Warden. Then gets it verified by the usual field staff and Deputy Director(s)

The fight is still on as despite of 43 tiger reserves along in India, the population of this wild cat comes under danger with just a mere amount of negligence.
